While you cannot predict any issues happening to the structural integrity of your home when Mother Nature steps in, you can cover yourself just in case of an issue. Prevention is far less expensive than a cure, and some of the things that can affect your building that buildings insurance can cover are:
- Fire, flood, storm damage
- Subsidence – where the foundations of your home slowly sink into the ground beneath it
- Heave – where the land rises and disturbs the structure of the home
- Pipes – frozen pipes in the winter? Water damage needs coverage
- Shed & garage
- Accidental damage
- Home emergencies like broken heating systems
- Moving home
What Isn’t Covered?
There are, of course, things that buildings insurance won’t cover you for and these are things that will be written into your insurance policy. These can include:
- General wear and tear
- Gradual building decay
- Pest infestations
- Frost damage
- Deliberate damage
The insurance policy that you have will dictate whether any of those exclusions apply to you, and it’s very important to remember that the policy you have won’t offer the same level of cover as other policies. If you are a property owner, you need to have buildings insurance no matter what, and if you have a mortgage, your lender will need you to have insurance in place – you are legally responsible for the building. At 1st Mortgage Services, we are happy to help you to choose your buildings insurance and we deal with a number of providers to find you a policy suitable to your needs.
