Our History

Julie Gilbert, owner of 1st Mortgage Services, started the business in February 2008 and has been a Mortgage Adviser since 1998 at the tender age of 18!

In her employed life, Julie was lucky to have four amazing employers before starting her own business. Her business interest started at the Black Sheep Brewery, aged 16. Here, unbeknown to Paul & Sue Theakston, she watched them like a hawk, wanting to have her own business one day. Julie also studied business at college, giving her a good grounding to start her career.

At 18, Julie’s father (Vic), a farmer, was out locally one night and had a random chat with his insurance broker who had just received notice from his financial adviser that she was leaving. To cut a long story short, the next day Julie got her job! Over a few years, and a lot of study alongside working, Julie became a fully qualified Financial Adviser.

In 2001, Julie bought her first house with her husband, Simon, and moved to Northallerton. Here she moved jobs and became a specialist in giving Mortgage Advice, working for a local IFA.

In 2004, Julie was invited to head up a team of brokers in Harrogate and, while at that point she had the vision of setting up her own business, she felt she still had more to learn.

In early 2008, her dream became reality and 1st Mortgage Services opened its doors.

Julie’s future vision is to have a number of advisers on board, helping Yorkshire & beyond with their mortgage & protection needs; providing the utmost trustworthy mortgage advice there is.

1st Mortgage Services prides itself on giving our professional colleagues, introducers and, most importantly, our customers – an all-round exceptional service.

Julie says:

“I work exceptionally hard to make sure our clients are truly happy with the service we provide. I want all our clients to be happy with what we achieve for them – this is deeply important to me! The business as a whole has this fundamental culture and philosophy at all times.”

1st Mortgage Services is now a team of 3 and continues to grow organically as demand increases. We are continually looking to new opportunities to develop and strengthen the business.
